charmer 2025, stoneware, airbrushed + handpainted glaze. 2 x 1 x 3'

charmer was inspired by staffordshire dog figurines from the 19th century. those were usually king charles spaniels, mine is a poodle. staffordshire figurines were massproduced out of earthenware using molds, quickly and cheaply. figurines were/are used to indicate wealth, class, status, taste. purebred dogs, british royalty, pastures, and politicos were popular staffordshire subjects because they demonstrated the buyers worldliness and education. i was, and still am, interested in ceramics' historical function as symbol and commodity. how these objects are shaped by us but also help us to shape our perceptions of ourselves and of our world.
